Did you know postnatal depression and anxiety affects around one in 10 new dads? The condition does not discriminate against race, religion or gender, according to Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia (PANDA).
“The best way to know how dad is going is to ask him. Simple questions such as ‘How are you?’, ‘How’s fatherhood treating you?’ and ‘How are you managing work and home?’ plus offering your assistance and support are excellent ways to encourage your friend to talk about their experience as a new parent,” she says. Three ways new dads can look after themselves and keep healthy are:
- Recognising that this is an important life transition – and giving themselves time to adjust.
- Trying to create a balance between work and home.
- Eating well, resting when they can and trying to get some exercise as well.
