As a parent, I find myself faced with a real dilemma. I don’t want to take the extreme hard line in rationing wireless access for my children, as I know the world is changing at a far greater pace than when I was a child and they need to keep up with it. However, I do feel a real obligation to give them the skills I’m familiar with, such as being able to interact with others, have a conversation and a point of view and learn the art of debating and backing up an argument.

They’re so ingrained that we rarely, if ever, examine them, instead sticking to well-trodden parenting paths full of the word ‘should’. The baby ‘should’ sleep alone, ‘should’ be left to cry it out, and these days parents ‘should’ go straight back to work.

Homework isn’t something I ever enjoyed. I remember it becoming an unavoidable part of high-school life, but not so much in my younger years. I now find myself the mother of three primary-school children who have homework every day. None of them are particularly thrilled about it. In fact, just a few short weeks into the school year, we were in a very ugly place.
