App Review: Tinybeans

Tinybeans is a gem of an app that’s a scrapbook, photo album, baby book and journal in one. It makes Instagram – my previous go-to app for recording my daughter’s life – seem fairly basic.

Using a calendar format, you select a day then add a new moment by uploading a photo or video, and you can attach a note to help remember milestones and special events such as ‘first haircut’. You can upload as many moments as you like each day, and create different ones for each of your children. Parents can upload photos to the same journal from their own phones, and there is a section to list the number of children in your family, including their birth date, weight, height and head circumference.

Like Instagram, there is a similar library of filters to enhance photos, but there are many other options as well, and you can edit the focus, orientation, brightness, contrast, sharpness and red eye, and even whiten teeth and remove blemishes. There are fun features such as frames, drawing tools and stickers to add silly glasses, a hat or a crown to your child’s head. As an invite-only app, Tinybeans is also more private than Instagram, however photos can still be easily shared on Facebook.

The only thing that could be improved is the video length (you can only upload a short clip at present), but all up this app is perfect for today’s parents (including yours truly) who are addicted to technology and want to capture every important and hilarious moment in their child’s life in an organised way.

Tinybeans Pty Ltd is free to download and requires iOS 8.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. platforms.
